Pope Urban VI - Wikipedia
Richard Plantagenet later the Duke of York and Somerset are equally antagonistic, with their followers signaling their allegiance by wearing white or red roses. As they squabble, French forces kill Talbot and his son. The English army captures and executes Joan. Suffolk arranges a marriage between Henry and Margaret, daughter of the king of Naples, in order to keep her near him and give him, through her, control of England.
From the Director of the Folger Shakespeare Library. Characters in the Play. Lord Talbot , afterwards Earl of Shrewsbury. Earl of Suffolk , William de la Pole. Here he finally received instruction in the basic principles of programming, cleaning up many of the bad hacking habits he had developed on his own. He became intrigued by the recently developed field of artificial intelligence—the key to designing the kinds of computers he had dreamed about as a child. To be on the frontier of this new field, he applied and was accepted to the graduate school in computer science at Harvard University.
At Harvard Graham finally had to confront something about himself—he was not cut out for academia. He hated writing research papers. The university way of programming took all the fun and excitement out of it—the process of discovering through trial and error. He was a hacker at heart, one who liked to figure things out for himself. He found a fellow hacker at Harvard, Robert Morris, and together they began to explore the intricacies of the programming language Lisp.
It seemed like the most potentially powerful and fluid language of them all. Understanding Lisp made you understand something essential about programming itself. It was a language suited for high-level hackers, a language specifically made for investigation and discovery. Disillusioned with the computer science department at Harvard, Graham decided to design his own graduate school program: he would take a wide range of classes and discover what interested him the most. To his surprise, he found himself attracted to art—to painting, and to the subject of art history itself.
What this meant to him was that he should follow this interest and see where it would lead. He returned to the States broke but determined to try his hand at painting. He would pay for his lifestyle with intermittent consulting work in programming. As the years went by, he would occasionally reflect on the course of his life.
Artists in the Renaissance would go through clear-cut apprenticeships, but what could he say about his own apprenticeship? There seemed to be no real design or direction to his life. Shaping his life in this haphazard way, he learned what to avoid—academia; working for large companies; any political environment.
He liked the process of making things. What really mattered to him in the end was having possibilities—being able to go in this or that direction, depending on what life presented to him. If over the years he had undergone an apprenticeship, it was almost by default. One afternoon in , he heard on the radio a story about Netscape—the company itself was touting its future and discussing how someday most businesses would be selling their products on the Internet itself, with Netscape leading the way. With his bank account getting desperately low again, yet dreading the idea of returning to another consulting job, he recruited his old hacker friend Robert Morris to help him create software for running an online business.
No one had thought of this before. They would write the program in Lisp, taking advantage of the speed with which they could make changes to it. They called their business Viaweb, and it would be the first of its kind, the pioneer of online commerce. Just three years later they sold it to Yahoo! In the years to come Graham would continue on the path set in his twenties, moving to where his interests and skills converged, to wherever he could see possibilities.
In he gave a talk at Harvard about his experiences with Viaweb.

The students, excited by his advice, pleaded with him to start up some kind of consulting firm. Intrigued by the idea, he created Y Combinator, an apprenticeship system for young entrepreneurs in technology, with his company taking a stake in each successful startup. Disgrace and humiliation were stamped upon them. Such is the reward for the transgressors and those who reject the signs of Allah. Bani Israil bore the trademarks of the thankless: constantly complaining about whatever they were provided with.
They were unappreciative of any divine favours, and took everything for granted, and in fact, carried within them a sense of entitlement. They were quick to lament about everything and repeatedly overstepped their boundaries with Allah. We may look at unpleasant qualities with disdain, but it is also time to ponder if we ourselves have these qualities within us! The twelve tribes wandered in the desert for decades, walking in circles and never finding their way out.
This was their punishment, but also their spiritual cleansing. Sometimes calamity can also be a trial and purification from Allah to us. Yet, by and large, their attitudes remained unacceptable. They had all but forgotten how badly they were treated in Egypt, instead behaving with a haughty sense of entitlement even to Allah.
We will explore some of these stories in other articles, insha Allah. For the majority of them, no matter what proof was shown to them, their hardened hearts would reject such evidence. We will not believe in you until we see God openly. In another incident and according to Ibn Abass, in the same incident Musa AS then stood in front of his Lord and prayed to Him to forgive the wrongdoing of his people:. You are our Wali Protector , so forgive us and have Mercy on us, for You are the Best of those who forgive.
In another occasion, a mountain was raised over their heads, and they thought that it would fall on them so hastily prostrated to Allah. Allah said:. Although they constantly challenged and defied Allah, whenever they were in need of divine intervention, they would turn to Musa AS to pray to Allah for them. This eventually caused them to reach the point where they became spiritually blind and incapable of receiving any divine guidance. Earlier, we had mentioned that Musa AS left his tribe for thirty days, which then extended to forty days, for a meeting with Allah on the Mount of Tur.
But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level, and Musa fell unconscious.
I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers. Even a mountain, which is physically stronger and firmer than a human being, was unable to endure the direct vision of Allah. When Allah manifested a very small part of Himself, the mountain crumbled into fine dust. Musa AS lost consciousness and when he came to, repented to Allah.
Part VI, Chapter 39
People will lose their consciousness on the Day of Judgment, and I will be the first to gain the consciousness. But suddenly, I will find Musa holding one of the legs of the Throne [of Allah]. I do not know whether he gained consciousness before me, or did he not lose his consciousness for his unconsciousness on Tur? So take what I have given you and be among the grateful. I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient. This are all severe lessons for each of us.
Arrogance is the worst trait that we can have, with severe implications on our souls. Listen to this advice:. And if they see the way of consciousness, they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way.
How to Become the Ideal Apprentice: Part VI
That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them. The arrogance will be blinded even if they see every sign, and will not accept any guidance even if they saw every possible proof and evidence of it. This was repeatedly seen in the lives of Bani Israel, but many Muslims today are guilty of the same affliction. The majority of people fall into this category today.
Musa to place his hand over the back of an ox, for he will be allowed to live for a number of years equal to the number of hairs coming under his hand. What will be then? Musa AS was expecting many tasks to be carried out before his death, including to take Bani Israel out of their wandering, but Allah ordained otherwise. The major message in this story is a warning for all of us to be careful. Arrogance is the destroyer, and has always been and will always be. Humble yourself to the glory of Allah and always try to comprehend the messages He sent you.
Beg Him to make all these signs the source of guidance to you.
Why Wasn't I Chosen?: An Open Edit Letter (Part VI)
The opposite occurred in Bani Israel, despite all the major signs being presented to them, their wicked hearts, overflowing with arrogance, made them blind from gaining the wisdom, humbleness and humility to the will and power of Allah SWT. Be careful! Today, we as Muslims, have a similar attitude as what Bani Israel had. We witness major disasters, diseases and instability all around us but ignore them.

Instead, mankind has increased in arrogance and blindness, instead of having the humbleness and humility in trying to seek forgiveness and guidance from Allah SWT. Today, we are so occupied about maintaining our materialistic life that we ignore the signs of Allah flashing before us, all of which are reminders and a wake-up calls for us.
What is the implication? The blindness will increase, the sign of Allah will increase, and the torture of Allah can descend upon us.
This is one of the most crucial lessons that should be learnt. And among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. Do they [then] wait for anything except that the angels should come to them or your Lord should come or that there come some of the signs of your Lord?
